How to Join Maybelle Squares with the Join-As-You-Go technique

Welcome to the tutorial of How To Join Maybelle Squares with the Join-As-You-Go technique. The Maybelle Square has 21 stitches on each side and therefor you will have to modify the original Join-As-You-Go technique. First of all you need to make a square with granny clusters (group of 3tr (UK) in one stitch or space) to start off your joining. I have used Tilda colour 507 - Chalk Beige for my joining of the Maybelle Squares.

This tutorial is a part of the Maybelle Blanket Pattern and you can find the other tutorials here:

Abbreviations:
ch - chain
tr -  treble UK (double crochet US)
sl st - slip stitch
st/sts - stitch/stitches

LAY OUT YOUR SQUARES
First of all, lay out all your squares and arrange them in the way you want them, finding a balance between all colors used, or follow my illustration above. Take a photo to refer to if you mess up the order of the squares later on. Collect your squares from left to right having the left square on top of your pile. Mark it as Row 1 and put in a safe place. Repeat this with the rest of the rows. You will join one row at the time starting with Row 1 etc, when assembling your blanket.

THE FIRST SQUARE

Start in a corner and ch3 (counts as first tr), make another 2tr-ch3-3tr in the same corner: your first corner is made (picture 1). Skip 2sts , [3tr in next st, skip 2st] and rep [ ] until you have 3sts left on the side (picture 2). This is the tricky part, which is not tricky at all!!! Now SKIP ALL 3 STITCHES and make 3tr-ch3-3tr in the next corner (picture 3). Continue all way around your square and slip stitch in top chain of your first 3 chains to close your row. No one will know. No one will see. It looks awesome. You should have 8 granny clusters on one side from corner to corner (picture 4).

FOLLOWING SQUARES IN YOUR FIRST ROW
When joining Maybelle Squares you will work from left to right and make one row at the time. In your first row you will join your squares to the right side of your previous square (right handed) which is the blue square in this picture. First crochet one side of granny clusters on your pink square. When arriving to the corner, make the first granny cluster in the corner, ch1 - join with sl st in the upper right corner of the blue square from the front - ch1, make the second granny cluster into your corner, your corner is joined. Now join with sl st in next space between granny clusters on the blue square, skip 2sts, make a granny cluster in the next st. Repeat this until the end, joining in every space between clusters and in the corner of the blue square. More detail pictures on this technique can be found at the Join-As-You-Go tutorial.

FIRST SQUARE IN SECOND ROW
When you start your second row of the blanket, add your first square to the bottom side of your first square (the blue square). Join your yellow square like you did with the pink square.

FOLLOWING SQUARES IN SECOND ROW
Following squares in the second row is joined at the bottom side of the above square (pink in picture) and on the right side of the previous square (blue in picture). Start in joining in the above square's right corner and work yourself to the left (picture 1 & 2). When joining the corner with all three squares, join with a sl st in the pink corner, skip the blue corner and make a chain instead and then join with sl st in the yellow corner (picture 3). A lucky clover lace shape is created in the 4-square joining (picture 4).I hope this was helpful and that you will enjoy the making of your own Maybelle Blanket.
